When I was in school, there was a standard for facts that I could always trust, the Encyclopedia Britannica. Sure, it was large and not that easy to use, but it was a trusted source for information. If I had a paper to write or an answer to find, the Encyclopedia Britannica was my go-to source. But life has changed. First, it was Yahoo, then Google, Bing, and Duck Duck Go, all offered to find information for me.
Out of those, Google has become the font of all knowledge for many Americans. Upwards of 90% of all Internet searches are handled by Google. Then we had Facebook and all of the other Social Media spin-offs that all claimed to be the place to go to see what’s going on in the world.
I remember being aghast when I found out that many young people were watching a Comedy Central program to get their news. And with more and more evidence that these new sources of information are manipulating the data, I am repeatedly driven back to a lesson I learned long ago.

Who is in charge of your children? That has been a perennial question that has grown in importance over the last few years. When I was a child, it was understood that, with rare exceptions, parents were in charge of a child’s upbringing. This included medical, religious, and educational decisions. However, over the last few decades, the role of the parent in these decisions has been replaced by experts. What happens when the goal of the experts differs from those of the parents? Who decides the future of the rising generations? It was understood that the state acted in loco parentis, in place of the parents, only for the safety of the child. A recent case in U.S. District Court shows that be it health departments, child services, schools, or even the courts. Government not only believes they know better than the parents, they are more than willing to act in loco parentis tyrannis.

With the release of ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence (AI) applications, there has been a lot of speculation and downright assertions about our future. With over 30 years of experience in Information Technology (IT), not more than a passing understanding of AIs, I've come to the conclusion that much of what I've heard is more science fiction than fact. A recent court case decided in the D.C. District Court revolved around one very important question. Do AIs have rights?

When it comes to freedom of speech, there are two things that generate a fair amount of controversy. First is yelling “Fire” in a crowded theater and second is burning the United States flag. Recently, Donald Trump issued an Executive Order about flag burning. So let's take a look at the order and some of the history around flag burning.
It seems most people look to the federal government to fix every problem. I think that’s because they are under the false impression that the federal government can do anything it wants. I’m not sure if there have been more acts of violence lately, or they’ve just been covered more in the media. What many of these acts have in common may surprise you.
