Trust can be a fickle thing. You can spend a lifetime earning it only to see it disappear in the blink of an eye. America only exists as a republic as long as We the People, trust that the people in office are the ones we have chosen. In other words, a republic only exists as long as the people trust their elections. After over 200 years of building trust in our electoral system, the last two decades have done a lot of harm to that trust.
But it’s not just the election system We the People, are losing trust in. Polls show that more and more, the “institutions” of society are losing trust. The effects of our lack of trust have been pretty bad, but they are rapidly approaching catastrophic levels. Is it because the people have lost trust in our republic, or because the institutions we once trusted no longer are trustworthy?

Who is in charge of your children? That has been a perennial question that has grown in importance over the last few years. When I was a child, it was understood that, with rare exceptions, parents were in charge of a child’s upbringing. This included medical, religious, and educational decisions. However, over the last few decades, the role of the parent in these decisions has been replaced by experts. What happens when the goal of the experts differs from those of the parents? Who decides the future of the rising generations? It was understood that the state acted in loco parentis, in place of the parents, only for the safety of the child. A recent case in U.S. District Court shows that be it health departments, child services, schools, or even the courts. Government not only believes they know better than the parents, they are more than willing to act in loco parentis tyrannis.

With the release of ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence (AI) applications, there has been a lot of speculation and downright assertions about our future. With over 30 years of experience in Information Technology (IT), not more than a passing understanding of AIs, I've come to the conclusion that much of what I've heard is more science fiction than fact. When it comes to freedom of speech, there are two things that generate a fair amount of controversy. First is yelling “Fire” in a crowded theater and second is burning the United States flag. Recently, Donald Trump issued an Executive Order about flag burning. So let's take a look at the order and some of the history around flag burning.
