The immediate conversation after a school or mass shooting is always gun control. This call for our lawmakers to ban, limit, restrict, or impose tighter regulations on guns makes headlines almost as fast as the details of the event and the names and faces of the victims.
What I can never understand about gun control being the proposed solution after a school shooting is the omission of conversation about the state of the person holding the gun. We talk as if the gun woke up one day, unlocked the gun safe, walked itself out of the house, and went on a shooting spree. The gun is only as dangerous as the person firing it.
We fail to dive deep into the mental health, societal influences, or socioeconomic constructs that are more than likely contributing to the decision-making of people committing these types of crimes. Gun violence is the only instance where we blame the weapon and not the user of that weapon.

Who is in charge of your children? That has been a perennial question that has grown in importance over the last few years. When I was a child, it was understood that, with rare exceptions, parents were in charge of a child’s upbringing. This included medical, religious, and educational decisions. However, over the last few decades, the role of the parent in these decisions has been replaced by experts. What happens when the goal of the experts differs from those of the parents? Who decides the future of the rising generations? It was understood that the state acted in loco parentis, in place of the parents, only for the safety of the child. A recent case in U.S. District Court shows that be it health departments, child services, schools, or even the courts. Government not only believes they know better than the parents, they are more than willing to act in loco parentis tyrannis.
