Years ago I taught Sunday School, several of those years I was teach high-school level teenagers. Every year I pointed out to my students that the most difficult question I would ask all year was “Why?” What makes that the most difficult question for a group of Sunday School students? Because many of them would hide behind what they had heard and didn’t really even understand their own answer.
Over the years I’ve found asking “Why?” to be very important to understanding not only my own position, but those we find in politics and media. Why does the media cover certain stories and not others? Why do politicians promote the policies that they do? And probably most important, why do these actors NOT do certain things? Perhaps, if we took some time to consider why we support different policies, we could make better arguments for them. And if we begin to consider why we are told what we are told while other things are kept hidden, we would be in a better position to choose our elected representatives to protect our freedom. - Live 4PM ET with Host Paul Engel @CyberEngel

Who is in charge of your children? That has been a perennial question that has grown in importance over the last few years. When I was a child, it was understood that, with rare exceptions, parents were in charge of a child’s upbringing. This included medical, religious, and educational decisions. However, over the last few decades, the role of the parent in these decisions has been replaced by experts. What happens when the goal of the experts differs from those of the parents? Who decides the future of the rising generations? It was understood that the state acted in loco parentis, in place of the parents, only for the safety of the child. A recent case in U.S. District Court shows that be it health departments, child services, schools, or even the courts. Government not only believes they know better than the parents, they are more than willing to act in loco parentis tyrannis.

With the release of ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence (AI) applications, there has been a lot of speculation and downright assertions about our future. With over 30 years of experience in Information Technology (IT), not more than a passing understanding of AIs, I've come to the conclusion that much of what I've heard is more science fiction than fact. A recent court case decided in the D.C. District Court revolved around one very important question. Do AIs have rights?

When it comes to freedom of speech, there are two things that generate a fair amount of controversy. First is yelling “Fire” in a crowded theater and second is burning the United States flag. Recently, Donald Trump issued an Executive Order about flag burning. So let's take a look at the order and some of the history around flag burning.
It seems most people look to the federal government to fix every problem. I think that’s because they are under the false impression that the federal government can do anything it wants. I’m not sure if there have been more acts of violence lately, or they’ve just been covered more in the media. What many of these acts have in common may surprise you.
