When I was a young man just getting started in business, I was given a good piece of advice. “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”
The people I encountered would be less concerned with my knowledge and credentials until they saw how I lived my life, including caring about them. This simple phrase has not only been shown true over my lifetime, but I’ve also used it to help me succeed in my career.
As proof that there is nothing new under the sun, Jesus said something very similar to the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 17: “You will know them by their fruits.” It’s not someone’s credentials or reputation that gives you real insight about them, but what comes out of what they do, the fruit of their lives.
Now let’s look at some of the “fruit” of those in positions of trust and profit in our lives today. Is that fruit sweet, juicy, pleasant, rotten, or bitter? As we are already preparing for another election, perhaps instead of focusing on donkeys and elephants, we should look at the fruit of people’s lives and policies to help guide our decisions.

Who is in charge of your children? That has been a perennial question that has grown in importance over the last few years. When I was a child, it was understood that, with rare exceptions, parents were in charge of a child’s upbringing. This included medical, religious, and educational decisions. However, over the last few decades, the role of the parent in these decisions has been replaced by experts. What happens when the goal of the experts differs from those of the parents? Who decides the future of the rising generations? It was understood that the state acted in loco parentis, in place of the parents, only for the safety of the child. A recent case in U.S. District Court shows that be it health departments, child services, schools, or even the courts. Government not only believes they know better than the parents, they are more than willing to act in loco parentis tyrannis.

With the release of ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence (AI) applications, there has been a lot of speculation and downright assertions about our future. With over 30 years of experience in Information Technology (IT), not more than a passing understanding of AIs, I've come to the conclusion that much of what I've heard is more science fiction than fact. A recent court case decided in the D.C. District Court revolved around one very important question. Do AIs have rights?

We all learned about Separation of Powers in school, at least I hope we all did. While usually focused on the different branches of government, there is also a separation of powers between the state and federal governments. As James Madison stated in Federalist Paper #45:
The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government are few and defined. Those which are to remain in the State governments are numerous and indefinite. The former will be exercised principally on external objects, as war, peace, negotiation, and foreign commerce; with which last the power of taxation will, for the most part, be connected. The powers reserved to the several States will extend to all the objects which, in the ordinary course of affairs, concern the lives, liberties, and properties of the people, and the internal order, improvement, and prosperity of the State.
