Sometimes, we can’t see the forest for the trees. We focus so much on one thing we miss everything else around it. For example, we focus so much on everything that’s wrong with America, and we sometimes forget that millions of people every year don’t run from here; they come here.
I’m old enough to remember the Cold War. I remember people risking being shot crossing the Berlin Wall, shark-infested waters in rickety rafts, and even being shot in front of a firing squad just for trying to get to America. We were proud to be Americans. We knew we weren’t perfect, but we were proud not only of what we had achieved but what we had brought to the world, liberty, freedom, and arms to defend them.
Today, millions of people are still trying to get to America. So many that we have to turn many of them away, or at least that is what the law says. Yet it appears American Pride is falling. Is it because America has become the racist and intolerant nation so many accuse us of? Is it because anyone here doesn’t have the chance to become President, a rich tycoon, or whatever they want to be? Or is it because we spend so much time looking at our problems we can’t see the blessings of living in this country?

Who is in charge of your children? That has been a perennial question that has grown in importance over the last few years. When I was a child, it was understood that, with rare exceptions, parents were in charge of a child’s upbringing. This included medical, religious, and educational decisions. However, over the last few decades, the role of the parent in these decisions has been replaced by experts. What happens when the goal of the experts differs from those of the parents? Who decides the future of the rising generations? It was understood that the state acted in loco parentis, in place of the parents, only for the safety of the child. A recent case in U.S. District Court shows that be it health departments, child services, schools, or even the courts. Government not only believes they know better than the parents, they are more than willing to act in loco parentis tyrannis.

With over 30 years of experience in Information Technology (IT), not more than a passing understanding of AIs, I've come to the conclusion that much of what I've heard is more science fiction than fact. I’ve always found the saying, “There’s more than one way to skin a cat.” both insightful and a bit disturbing. Yes, it reminds us there there is often more than one way to achieve our goals. But where are these people skinning cats?
