There are two main senses for the definition of the word “Institutionalized” in this context: “established as a common and accepted part of a system or culture” and “created and controlled by an established organization”. Government institutions were created as a part of our culture to do the things we agreed were best done collectively. Now, these institutions that are supposed to serve us now try to control us. Take for example, the federal courts.
The Supreme Court term ends at the end of June, which is when the court usually releases its more controversial and important opinions. Notice, I did not say rulings, because, contrary to popular opinion, the Supreme Court does not rule, it opines. Yet today many not only refer to these opinions as “rulings”, but attempt to enforce them as if they were. Over the next several days and weeks, I will be looking at some of these edicts from on high to give you some perspective, and hopefully some insights as well. Who is in charge of your children? That has been a perennial question that has grown in importance over the last few years. When I was a child, it was understood that, with rare exceptions, parents were in charge of a child’s upbringing. This included medical, religious, and educational decisions. However, over the last few decades, the role of the parent in these decisions has been replaced by experts. What happens when the goal of the experts differs from those of the parents? Who decides the future of the rising generations? It was understood that the state acted in loco parentis, in place of the parents, only for the safety of the child. A recent case in U.S. District Court shows that be it health departments, child services, schools, or even the courts. Government not only believes they know better than the parents, they are more than willing to act in loco parentis tyrannis.
