Privilege has become quite a buzzword in American society over the past few years. As is so often the case, we keep using that word, but I don’t think it means what you think it means.
There are plenty of examples of privilege, but that does not mean it’s a bad thing. For example, simply being born in the United States is great privilege. While no longer the freest nation, you certainly have more protections of your rights than the majority of people in the world. Even the poor in the United States live in more square footage and have more amenities than the average European. Let’s not forget, the number one medical issue in America is not malnutrition but obesity.
Even within such a privileged group of people, there are other privileges restricted to a limited few in this nation. Again, many of those privileges are a good thing. But when it comes to privileges before the law, then we are dealing with a bad thing. I think it’s about time the American people not only become more thankful of the privileges they enjoy, but stop putting up with those who are privileged before the law. - Live 4PM ET with Host Paul Engel @CyberEngel

Who is in charge of your children? That has been a perennial question that has grown in importance over the last few years. When I was a child, it was understood that, with rare exceptions, parents were in charge of a child’s upbringing. This included medical, religious, and educational decisions. However, over the last few decades, the role of the parent in these decisions has been replaced by experts. What happens when the goal of the experts differs from those of the parents? Who decides the future of the rising generations? It was understood that the state acted in loco parentis, in place of the parents, only for the safety of the child. A recent case in U.S. District Court shows that be it health departments, child services, schools, or even the courts. Government not only believes they know better than the parents, they are more than willing to act in loco parentis tyrannis.

With the release of ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence (AI) applications, there has been a lot of speculation and downright assertions about our future. With over 30 years of experience in Information Technology (IT), not more than a passing understanding of AIs, I've come to the conclusion that much of what I've heard is more science fiction than fact. A recent court case decided in the D.C. District Court revolved around one very important question. Do AIs have rights?

When it comes to freedom of speech, there are two things that generate a fair amount of controversy. First is yelling “Fire” in a crowded theater and second is burning the United States flag. Recently, Donald Trump issued an Executive Order about flag burning. So let's take a look at the order and some of the history around flag burning.
It seems most people look to the federal government to fix every problem. I think that’s because they are under the false impression that the federal government can do anything it wants. I’m not sure if there have been more acts of violence lately, or they’ve just been covered more in the media. What many of these acts have in common may surprise you.
